2nd of a Five Part Series on Responsible Leadership
In our first article in this series, we introduced a new leadership model called Responsible Leadership. The model is so simple, yet so powerful, in showing what it takes for organizations and individuals to achieve sustainable success that will withstand the test of time.
In this week’s article we are going to cover the first responsibility of organizational leaders, creating a solid foundation that the organization can build on. The foundation of an organization is its culture. The strength of a company’s culture will dictate how high and how wide it can grow over time.
So what goes into an organization’s culture? It starts with the company’s purpose or mission. Why does the company exist? The strength of the company’s mission can be the glue that connects everyone together. It also can be the source of energy that drives the team to be the best that they can be in all ways.
The foundation is also comprised of the company’s core values – the rules that they use to guide the company as it does business every day. For a great culture, the core values should be consistently used and applied throughout the organization.
In addition to clearly defined vision and values, other important aspects of great culture include:
- Leadership’s commitment to the organization’s success
- Listening and responding to employees
- Employee involvement and empowerment
- Continuous learning and development
- Performance management, recognition and reward systems
- Effective communication and conflict resolution
- Organizational flexibility and adaptability
Developing a successful culture is an ongoing process that requires continuous effort and improvement driven by the leadership team along with regular feedback and input from the employees. Maintaining a great culture must be a top priority at all times and it should evolve as the organization grows and changes over time. A company’s long-term success is highly impacted by the company’s ability to maintain a culture built around and focused on success.
Simply stated, culture impacts every aspect of how an organization operates. It sets the tone for how employees interact and collaborate with each other and their customers. Ultimately, it significantly influences a company’s short and long-term success.
